Tips for visiting Rome in summer

When preparing for a summer getaway to Rome, it is important to not only bring the usual travel essentials, but also items that will help you stay comfortable in the hot weather.

To avoid sunburn and adhere to the dress code of certain historical sites, it is advised to pack clothing that is loose-fitting and covers shoulders and waists. Also, be sure to bring a wide brimmed hat and comfortable sandals for walking. Additionally, a light shawl or scarf could come in handy in order to cover up when entering churches or other historic sites.

To beat the heat, a refillable water bottle is essential, as there are 2,500 public water fountains throughout the city known as “nasoni”. Not only are they free to use but the water is clean, safe and cold! Lastly, be sure to bring a power bank, as the long daylight hours in Rome will quickly drain your phone battery.

If you are visiting Rome during the summer and want to make the most of your trip, it is important to remember to avoid sightseeing during the hottest hours of the day, usually between 10.30am and 4.30pm. Sunstroke is a serious risk during this time and should be avoided.

A great way to experience Rome during the summer is to go sightseeing early in the morning. By getting an early start, you can avoid crowds and get the chance to experience Rome in its true beauty. Plus, you can take advantage of exclusive tours of the Vatican before the crowds arrive.

Alternatively, Rome is a stunning place to visit at night. Many famous attractions stay open late, such as the Colosseum, the Forum, and Castel Sant’Angelo. Evening tours are also available, allowing you to make the most of your time in the city.

When the temperatures in Rome start to heat up, many locals opt to replace their daily espresso with granita di caffe’. Granita is a delicious and cooling treat, made from shaved ice and topped with espresso, cream, and any other desired toppings. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a coffee in the summertime!

Another great way to stay cool in Rome is to treat yourself to the delicious gelato that the city has to offer. From traditional flavors like chocolate and strawberry to more inventive options like lavender and peach, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re young or old, gelato is sure to provide a sweet and refreshing respite from the hot summer weather.

With the right items packed, you can ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable summer stay in Rome.
