From its origins as a mausoleum to a military fortress, prison and now a museum, Castel Sant’Angelo’s complex and varied history will amaze and captivate any visitor. Generations of Romans have bared witness to the transformation of the citadel over 1,800 years, and its reputation for being a monument of secrets is a testament to the city’s turbulent past. Whether visiting to experience its grandeur or its mystery, a tour of Castel Sant’Angelo is bound to live up to its renown as an unforgettable experience.
One of Rome’s Most Popular Tourist Attractions
Situated alongside the Tiber River, the majestic Castel Sant’Angelo overlooks the Eternal City, providing stunning views from both sides. A short 10-minute walk from both the Vatican and Piazza Navona will take you to the castle’s walls – and don’t forget to take a stroll over the Ponte Sant’Angelo, where Bernini’s majestic white marble angel statues stand guard either side of the bridge. Alternatively, if you plan on arriving using public transportation, plenty of bus lines and the A metro line will take you right up to it.
The Timeless Enchantment Of Castel Sant’Angelo
A visit to its interiors will reveal the vestiges of a long, tumultuous history, as well as familiarize you with the mausoleum of the Roman emperor, a hideaway for Popes, and a fortress used in battle. For a true insight into its transformation through the ages, its infamous “Passetto di Borgo” or “er Corridore” – the elevated passageway connecting the Vatican walls to the castle – provides a window into darker days of Rome’s history.
The extravagantly decorated papal apartments, sculptures, paintings, marble artifacts, weapons, furniture and other objects will transport you directly to a time when these artefacts were new. And when you are done exploring the insides of the fortress, step outside and drink in the unforgettable vista of Rome during sunset.
