What to Pack: Clothing and Essentials

When packing for Rome in August, prioritize comfortable and lightweight clothing due to the hot and humid weather. Opt for breathable natural fabrics like cotton and linen, and choose loose-fitting attire. Shorts are acceptable, but be prepared with longer bottoms for church visits. Essentials include a sunhat, sunglasses, and high-quality footwear like walking sandals or canvas sneakers, as flip flops aren’t suitable for Rome’s cobblestone streets. Don’t forget sunscreen, a swimsuit for cooling off, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

Attraction and Establishment Openings

While some establishments might close, especially around the 15th for Ferragosto, many hotels, shops, and restaurants remain open to cater to tourists visiting popular sites like the Vatican and Colosseum. It’s worth noting that most major attractions, including museums, churches, and ancient Roman sites, are open on August 15th, with the exception of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Overall, despite some closures, Rome still has plenty to offer visitors during August, as the city itself is a treasure trove of beautiful squares, fountains, and open-air wonders.

Cultural Events and Festivities

During August, Rome embraces its rich past and vibrant present, celebrating various unique and cherished events.

  • The Geese and the Gauls on August 3rd, commemorates how geese sacred to the goddess Juno alerted Roman defenders to an attempted capture of the Capitoline Hill by Gallic invaders in 390 BC.
  • On August 5th, the Miracle of the Snow is remembered, marking the origins of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
  • Rome also celebrates St. Lawrence and the Perseids on August 10th, the city’s third patron saint who is linked to the popular Perseid meteor shower.
  • Ferragosto and the Feast of the Assumption on August 15th originates from the ancient Feriae Augusti festival, celebrating the end of agricultural work. Today, Romans continue to enjoy the festivities with rich eats and trips out of town.
  • Lastly, St. Bartholomew and the festival of watermelons takes place on August 24th, honoring the saint’s martyrdom while still highlighting a popular summer delight, watermelons.

Following these guidelines will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip to Rome in August.
